Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (often shortened to Dolby Labs and known simply as Dolby) is an American company specializing in audio noise reduction and audio encoding/compression. Dolby licenses its technologies to consumer electronics manufacturers.
Dolby Labs was founded by American Ray Dolby (1933–2013) in London, United Kingdom, in 1965.
Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation credits appear on almost every release with Dolby related sound encoding. However, on DVDs, credits are mainly limited to releases from Universal, Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, and some smaller studios.
In 2006, "Dolby Laboratories" credits began appearing on Paramount DVDs, and in 2010-11, this became the default credit for Dolby.
